C’est un truisme d’affirmer que, au cours du siècle écoulé, ia physionomie de nos villes a connu un bouleversement sans précédent. Des quartiers entiers se sont métamorphosés au point d’en devenir méconnaissables. Les impératifs d’une circulation automobile sans cesse plus exigeante et plus contraignante, l’industrialisation, le développement économique des Etats modernes ont remodelé le visage de nos cités. It is a truism to state that, in the course of the past century, the aspect of our towns underwent a radical upheaval.

Whole neighbourhoods changed so much that they became hardly recognizable. The threat of the traffic, which is continuously becoming more oppressive and restraining, the industrialization, the economic development of the modern States have remodeled the outlook of our cities. Who would dare to claim that the plastic surgery which was imposed on them by town-planning, too often neglectful of urbanization and by short-sighted building policy has only produced happiness ?

Brussels hasn’t escaped these upheavals. But all hasn’t been irremediably lost. In the course of the last 90 years, the capital has known increasing topographical diversities; an important number of new public and private buildings have added to her wealth. These bear witness of great architects’ creativeness. These constructions reveal conceptions and attitudes which are an expression of an art of living harmonizing with the rhythms and movements of a society in full mutation.
