A good psychological attitude is an essential ingredient of every successful golfer's armoury. And, as with the physical, the cerebral side of the game must be cultivated through study and practice. Quite simply one has to become more cunning and plan more carefully as one progresses. Older players know the truth of this, especially as their drives shorten and the power disappears. Ability to relax and learning to use the imagination in a positive way hold the key.

In this book, into which I have incorporated the best features of my earlier, widely acclaimed tomes on instruction, / Can Help and Use the Head, I have tried to put the accent, in the simplest terms, on how to approach the inner game. Artist friends Pete Sluis, Charles McNeill and photographer Eddie de Barra have helped me assemble a comprehensive visual presentation. The result, I hope, will give you a deeper insight of a great game and help you achieve match-winning scores on the course.

I want you to develop your own style, your own swing. You must also understand, however, that you cannot expect to learn the game overnight. Look on it in the same way as one would learning to play the piano. Could you learn to play \t in one night? Of course not! You must allow yourself time to improve and make time to practise without actually playing. You can practise as you are reading. Have a club beside you, preferably a number eight iron, and work with it as you see the concept that appeals to you straight away. In this way you will allow your muscles and brain learn together. It is also very true to say to you that you should never try out a shot on the golf course unless you are happy with it on the practise ground.

In the game of golf there are only nine bad shots, just two moves in the golf swing and two parts to the golf club. Every shot you strike has three basic characteristics. Six out of a possible nine bad shots are struck from the outside-in. The first move in the golf swing is to create power and the second is to use that power and release it properly. The only difference between the great player and the "trier" is simply in the "trier's" swing the power he/she creates stays with him/her above the grip end throughout the entire swing. The great player is able to combustionise the power to deflect it away from his/her upper body down the shaft to the clubhead end.
