This is the story of 100 years of secondary rail transport in Belgium—now alas only a shadow of the once great nationwide network of light railways. It is a story for readers with very diverse interests, covering steam operation, the gradual electrification of all the important lines, the conversion of minor lines to operation by diesel autorail—and the gradual disintegration of rail services into a national bus network.

The greater part of the text is devoted to a detailed story of the system from inception to present day, on a province-by-province basis.

There are many maps to various scales to make the story clearer, and route lists at various dates complete the picture in many urban areas.

The Vicinal had a chequered history, suffering partial dismantling during two world wars, and its political background and administration are given in detail, the early operation by concessionnaires with SNCV-owned equipment being explained.

The rolling stock was extraordinarily diverse, and this applies to all forms of traction. The development of the autorail for minor lines was an important achievement, and some of the work was done by the SNCV's own workshops. Electric stock ranged from early two-axle cars through the superb "Standard" bogie cars to postwar streamlined cars, culminating in the recently-introduced fleet of six-axle articulated cars. There is a wealth of detail on the many varieties of vehicle, and many tables support the textual descriptions. The Vicinal had a wealth of "tramscape" all of its own, and the photographs have been selected to show the background to all forms of traction.

The author is well known for his many books on light railways in the U.K. and on the Continent. His special interests include the economics and operating problems of local transport.
