The Alvis 12/50 is recognised today as one of the classic cars of the vintage years. To any person with an eye for engineering, the 12/50 provides ample evidence of being made with superlative engineering skill and exquisite workmanship. The design is refined and yet simple. In use, the car responds surely, quickly and precisely to the driver's controls. As to economy in upkeep, my own 12/50, after forty years service, still gives an annual 6,000 miles at half the running costs of a modern day car of a lesser capacity. The Alvis 12/50 functions perfectly, and in an engineering sense is a beautiful car. A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.

Part I of this book tells of my own discovery of the 12/50 and how my knowledge of its excellence developed with ownership of three 12/50s. I know of no more enjoyable pastime than going for a drive in my own and other people's 12/50s, or of reading, talking or thinking about them. Through membership of the Alvis Register, a club catering for owners of 12/50s, I have made many friends who appear to get an equal amount of pleasure from this absorbing interest. This is not simply a fad about an inanimate machine, for it is my belief that any man-made object is an extension of the personalities of the men that created it.

Part II gives the reader a very brief introduction to the creators of the Alvis 12/50. It tells of some of their successes in the context of the 1920s and of their remarkable engineering foresight. This is brought out by a short account of their venture into the production of front wheel drive cars over forty years ago. This aspect is covered very thoroughly in "The Vintage Alvis11 by Peter Hull and Norman Johnson. The personalities of the central characters and the wonderful spirit which always existed in the Alvis Company, which I have experienced personally, is captured most effectively by Ken Day in his book, "The Alvis Car 1920 - 1966".

Part III deals with the upkeep of the 12/50 engine comprehensively and is intended primarily for 12/50 owners. It should help them keep the hydrocarbons flowing through the jets of their 12/50 carburettors indefinitely. It is hoped that it may prove possible at some future date to run to a second edition for the benefit of 12/50 owners and admirers. Part IV provides an illustrated parts list of engine components.
