Our exhibition focuses on a field of Bauhaus design that is both renowned and popular. Furniture has played no small part in making 'Bauhaus' the name of an era, turning it into a legend that has spread far beyond its origins. Hardly any other workshop shaped the image of the school so lastingly as the cabinet-making workshop. Today, Marcel Breuer's Weimar lattice chair, more a constructivist sculpture than a utilitarian object, and to an even greater extent, his earliest Dessau tubular steel furniture are considered icons of the twentieth century. Similarly, so are Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Weissenhof and Barcelona armchairs. As 'modern classics' they are the symbol of modern design. If the modern period stands for functionality, for a clear, streamlined approach to design in architecture and home furnishings, then this corresponds to Breuer or Mies van der Rohe's creations. They are far advanced in the direction of ever-increasing dematerialization, the utopian goal of which Breuer describes as the column of air, which we will ultimately sit on (page 6).

The 'classics' are identified with the Bauhaus, regardless of their origins. Just as, in the last 20 to 30 years, the name 'Bauhaus' has become disassociated from its actual historical origins in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin, the current usage of the term 'Bauhaus furniture' is anything but clear1 It can mean many things from the unique, historically authenticated museum piece to tubular steel plagiarisms of various origins, which today flood markets throughout the world. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify our terminology. For our exhibition we define Bauhaus furniture first and foremost in strictly historical terms as furniture designed at the Bauhaus school during the years 1919-1933 and produced in its workshops. The spectrum ranges from traditional carpentry of the founding years, [...]
