ONE Friday morning, under the Spring sun, of which it seemed no other Spring had known the sweetness and the beauty, the “ Panzer Divisions ” invaded Belgium.

For the second time in one generation, the same laborious and good-natured people, proud of its free institutions, heard the trampling of Prussian boots. After a campaign of eighteen days, her army had its back to the sea, half the population was fleeing under the machine-gunning of the Luftwaffe, and it seemed that Belgium would be wiped from the map of the world.

Three years have passed, her King is a prisoner, her constitutional government has sought refuge in London, where it is continuing the struggle at the side of the Allies. In Belgium the population carries on a relentless fight against the invader.

The photographs that illustrate this album will bring to the free peoples of the world a picture of this effort. The Belgian reader will find therein the fruit of a patient and obscure labour. He will see with confidence the soldiers of 1943, worthy sons of those of King Albert, and the glorious flags of 1914, at the head of which the armies of liberation are preparing to chase the tyrants from their country, for the second time.

Men of heart of every nation, who acquire this little book, will read with emotion what a small, happy and peace-loving nation can achieve when it is martyrised. Few sights are more noble and more comforting.

Under the direction of the constitutional government which was freely chosen by the Nation, backed by the inexhaustible riches and the potential industry of the Belgian Congo, of which they have made one of the most beautiful fields of civilisation of our day, the Belgians are united, without reserve, and with all their power, in the titanic fight of the Allies.
